Life is full of surprises and wonders.

Watching the English

Monday, March 02, 2009

I started reading this book, during the second week of my arrival in UK as suggested by one of the English professor. The content is far beyond your expectations if you are looking for romance, lovey dovey kind of thing in a book. Suprisingly, it was written by the writer on her observations about the people of her origin as she said, the English need to be understood too. Reading it had made me becoming aware of my surroundings and improved the way I communicate with others in my day to day life. From the passers by to the old couple right next door, distinctive design of an English home garden, to their jokes and their farewell bid. Although I was alone, I didn't really feel alienated in the foreign land as I had opened up myself to the British culture as much as possible, so long as it is not against my belief. I even stayed with a foster family in Hampshire in their cosy country home with a huggable taby cat called Tom. When I made the comparison between what I have read to their life, yes, there are so many similarities. The paintings of famous artist or family achievements for example are not hanged in the living room if they are from the upper class British family. Praise is often accepted with a gesture as if you are ashamed of it but it is always a good social etiquitte to express your admiration to others, from their son/ daughter achievements to shoes, hat or clothings.

It is time for me to pick up a new book. Oprah's recommendation will be a good one. The little black book by Cathy who? am not sure, this time around it is a motivational stuff!
